Second generation mobile networks consist of network and switching, base station, and operations subsystems as well as of systems offering supplementary services. The third generation mobile networks are structurally different from the second generation ones. For example in the UMTS system, the UMTS core network handles the tasks of the network and switching subsystem, while the UMTS terrestrial radio access network takes care of the tasks of the base station subsystem.
